Installation/1st-time starting problems

Q. Can't open softwareThe message says I have installed the program successfully but it won't work. What's wrong?

A. Make certain that you have installed both pieces of software on your machine. One is the EnergyGauge 2.0 software (3 disks) and the other is the Borland Database Engine (BDE - 2 disks). If you have installed the BDE on your machine previously (for EnergyGauge 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2) then you do not have to install it again. Typically, the BDE disks are not included with updates. Also, please save all disks for reinstallation in case a hard disk crashes or if you purchase a new computer.

Printer Problems

Having trouble printing
"List index out of bounds error"

Back to main contents

Q. I'm having trouble printing.

A. Printing problems are the most difficult for our tech support team to solve, as we don't have the printer and/or the same network printing system as you may have. EnergyGauge's printing system uses the Windows default printer and Windows printing routines. Therefore our suggestions for solving the printing problems are to try these steps:

  1. Check your Windows Control Panel Printer selection to verify a default printer is selected.
  2. See if the problem is repeatable, and if it happens from all EnergyGauge printing or just one report.
  3. If the problem occurred doing a "print all," try viewing the report to be printed and just printing one report at a time.
  4. Allow your printer to process the report and begin outputting the paper before sending more pages to the printer (this is particularly true for printers without much built-in memory).
  5. If the problem only occurs occasionally, verify that it may not be other software you are running and printing with prior to using EnergyGauge that may be causing the problem.
  6. Check with the printer manufacturer to see if they have updated drivers. [insert web-page links]
  7. Try hooking up the printer directly to your machine via a parallel port if you are currently having difficulty printing through a network.
  8. Try a different printer if there is one available. Install the appropriate software for the printer, and verify that it works with other programs before trying it with EnergyGauge.

Q. Each time I try to view or print a report I get a "List index out of bounds" error. What should I do?

A. The first thing you should do is save your project. Then exit the EnergyGauge program and restart it. Re-load the project that was giving you trouble and check the following:

  • Make sure you have a climate zone selected on the Project Page. If you have overlooked this entry, please enter it now.
  • Check your windows page and make sure that there are no window entries with "0" in the overhang height edit box. If one exists, either delete the entry (so there is nothing in the edit box) or change it to a non-zero value.

These are the two most common problems. If you still get the error when you try to print or view the reports, please save the file as an *.enb file and e-mail it to info@energygauge.com with an explaination of the error you are getting.

Run-time errors

Pdoxusrs.lck message
Sharing violation
System locked
Table is busy

Back to main contents

PDOXUSRS.lck message

Q. I get an error mentioning Pdoxusrs.lck whenever I try opening a project, why?

A. If you have Paradox, Dbase or other software that may use the same database engine, you may get the Pdoxusrs.lck error. The fix:

  1. Close EnergyGauge.
  2. Using your file manager or windows explorer program, find the RES97 directory under the directory where you installed EnergyGauge. For example, the default directory for the code standard version is EnCStd20.
  3. Find the file Pdoxusrs.lck under the RES97 directory using your file manager or windows explorer program.
  4. Highlight the Pdoxusrs.lck file by left clicking on it once. Verify that no other file or directory is highlighted.
  5. Delete the Pdoxusrs.lck file by hitting the delete key on your keyboard.

System locked or sharing violation

Q. I get a sharing or system locked violation whenever I run the program, why?

A. Make certain you are only running one EnergyGauge at a time. The program should be installed on your system hard drive, not a shared network drive.

System locked

Q. When I print or calculate the code from the "Calculate" choice on the menu bar my system is locked up - I can't return to the building notebook.

A. Does the Windows task bar at the bottom of your screen cover part of the EnergyGauge screen? If so, try moving your task bar below the bottom of your screen using your mouse (you can retrieve it by moving it up again). The bottom of the EnergyGauge screen has a "Close" button that must be pressed to return to the building notebook.

Table is busy

Q. I open the software and receive an error that says "Table is busy." What table?

A. The data you enter on each home is stored in database tables. If you receive this error the two most likely causes are that you have two copies of the software open at once, or you had an earlier error, such as index out of bounds, that forced you to quit EnergyGauge. Verify that you are not trying to run two copies of EnergyGauge, then reboot your computer and run EnergyGauge again.

Saving Data

Q. I want to transfer a house file to another computer - where do I find it?

A. The homes are stored in the RES97 directory in a database. They are not stored as individual homes. To transfer a file, open the project in EnergyGauge. From the project or other building notebook form, save the home as an *.enb file by selecting File|Save Current Project As *.enb file from the menu bar. Choose the directory and file name (you can save directly to a floppy disk if you want to) and select OK. To load an enb file, close any project you are working with and on the EnergyGauge project search screen, select the "Load *.enb file" button. Enter the correct disk drive, directory, and file name.

Q. How do I back-up my home files?

A. From the project or other building notebook form, save the home as an *.enb file by selecting File|Save Current Project As *.enb file from the menu bar. You can back up forty typical home son a floppy disk. You may also backup your database directory of hoes by copying your RES97 sub directory (found under the directory where you installed EnergyGauge 2.0 )to floppy disks or other storage medium (it may take three or more floppies). It is recommended to always back up each home file as you create it as an *.enb file to a floppy disk or other storage medium that is not part of your computer in case your computer hard disk(s) crash. Note that even if your system shows two hard drive letters (C: and D: for instance) it may be one physical device with partitions. Even if there are two physical hard drives, lightning or other failures could make both hard drives inoperable. thus, back up your data regularly to a medium that is not part of your computer system.
